Some Current Issues in Mathematics Education in Engineering Training

2024.11.20., 16:00–17:30
University of Debrecen, Faculty of Engineering
Debrecen, Ótemető Street 2-4., Room 111

Program Schedule:
16:00–16:30 Dr. Imre Kocsis: The Changing Role of Mathematics in Engineering Work – Expectations and Opportunities in Teaching Engineering Mathematics
16:30–17:00 Dr. Gábor Csaba Kézi, Dóra Sipos: Application-Oriented Mathematics Education in Engineering Training
17:00–17:30 Roundtable Discussion

Summary:
The rapid advancement of tools for performing calculations has significantly altered the required level and elements of mathematical knowledge applicable in engineering work. The first overview lecture addresses how engineering education must and can respond to these changes while considering existing constraints.

The second lecture presents three categories of problems that can be addressed in mathematics classes, classified by the complexity of the modeling steps needed for their solution.

Discussing technical problems in engineering mathematics classes generally fosters synergy between mathematical and professional subjects. Demonstrating the varying levels of detail in constructing mathematical models helps students understand the role of these models and the calculations performed within them. The presentation will showcase tasks from each category.
